I've been getting more into magnet fishing, and this is the gear I actually take with me when I go out. In the video below, I show my basic setup, including the magnet, rope, grappling hook, and a few other things that make the trip easier.
The Magnet: Magnet Boss 360
The main part of my setup is the Magnet Boss 360. I like using a 360-degree fishing magnet because it can attract metal from around the magnet instead of relying on just one pulling surface.

Why I Carry a Grappling Hook
Along with the magnet, I carry a dedicated rope and a grappling hook. The rope gives me enough working length from docks and shorelines, while the grappling hook is useful when I catch something awkward or bulky.

Why This Setup Works for Me
I like keeping my magnet fishing setup fairly simple. The Magnet Boss 360 handles most of the searching, the rope gives me plenty of reach, and the grappling hook gives me another option when I find something too awkward for the magnet alone.
Final Thoughts
For a beginner magnet fishing setup, I don't think you need to carry a huge amount of gear. A good 360-degree magnet, a solid rope, and a grappling hook cover most of what I run into.
